Draft Shooting Script Feedback

FEEDBACK ANALYSIS

SHOT 2: 'Have you got a location with your desired sign and a fence'. Yes, I know of a location near me which I walk past everyday at college which is an abandoned railway which was suppose to be re made but then they stopped again, hence why there is a newly made trespassing signs and new wooden fences. The area is located at Station Road, Endon.

SHOT 4: 'This needs to be split into the separate shots so that you can describe what is in each shot'. In my final shooting script, I will need to create more shots and think of different shots that I could use of the area, such as a time-lapse or a slow motion clip of the train yard. This would consist of maybe 2 or 3 more shots.

SHOT 8: 'How are you going to introduce the second actor without it looking like he appeared out of thin air'. That is a good question there. I do not know how I would do it. However, I feel that focusing on one actor instead of having two would be a lot easier to direct but a lot harder to think of shot ideas. I have however already got 2 people in mind who have agreed to film with me. One will be the actor, the main character within this music video and my other friend will be helping me with Camera positions as he is quite small and agile and If we work together, we can get really good camera shots.

SHOT 9: '2 Friends? 2 previous friends or 2 new friends'. I am no longer having two actors, I am instead just going to have one actor. Therefore I will need to make some small changes to some shots as I am now only going to be working with one actor.

SHOT 10: 'Again, it needs to be split up into the separate shots'. Yes I have to agree, this shot is 23 seconds long and definitely needs splitting up into individual shots. I need some more time to think what ideas I can come up with for the new shooting script for 23 seconds. Instead of a 2nd person been there with the main character, it will just be the main character exploring each location he stumbles upon.

SHOT 13: 'There has been a lot of exploring, how are you going to keep it exciting'. Well since the main character is trespassing, maybe I can make him look like he saw someone. He can become nervous and then starts to run furiously as the camera follows him on this intense chase, showing different angles and shots of the chase, such as shot from the ground slanted on the floor, showing the character run off into the distance.

SHOT 14: 'How are they having fun'. I started to loose ideas here and didn't know any shots or ideas that I could put in here in order to make the music video interesting and entertaining to watch. I will keep this in mind when creating my final shooting script and possibly create some better ideas than I previously did for my draft shooting script. Maybe an exit scene where the main character leaves the area? Hopefully I can think of something.

'ORDER'. Funny, I got a little bit unorganised when creating the shooting script at the time and added in one of the shots too early, therefore forcing me to but shot 19 at the end of shot 20, making it look unorganised. This will not happen again once I create my final shooting script.

Permission Requests

While researching how to contact the licencer of the song, I found out that in one of the labels terms and conditions, they are part of the Universal Music Production Group (UMG), so I went to the UMG's website to enquire about licencing a song which required the email I need to ask for permission

Final Song Choice

After days of thinking and planning - the outcome of my potential ideas and my questionnaire results, I have decided to go with a completely different song choice from my other potential ideas. The song is called 'Renegades' by X Ambassadors. The reason why I have chosen a different song is because of the feedback from my fellow classmates. When presenting my Potential Ideas, they said my most developed song choice could be challenging to make due to the slow place and then the huge explosive pace throughout the song. They also said that they couldn't imagine me creating a video about 'Gangsta's Paradise'. I have to agree with them to some extent as I would also find it hard to film things related to the lyrics as such.

I feel that this new song choice will allow me to create a successful music video. After choosing this video, I have a lot of confidence that this will work. I have some friends which are considering to help me film my project or act, including members of my family. This song fits perfectly to my youth, that you can be outlaws, risk takers, 'Renegades'. I feel that the use of instruments and the pace fits together perfectly. I also feel that this is the right song choice for me. I am enthusiastic and I cannot wait to start creating the music video!

Potential Ideas

Genre Research: Pop

Swagger Jagger by Cher Lloyd is a pop song which is targeted at a young audience between 14-21 year olds, mainly females. This is because the songs narrative is mainly about becoming popular and looking good in both real life and social media. It is now a thing for a young generation to become popular and 'good looking' on the internet with such lyrics as 'You can't stop YouTubing me'. Even though the Music Video has hardly any narrative at all and targets youngsters as such a young age, The lyrics and and the music video link perfectly with each other.

Not just that but the actors and dancers actually move to the beat, including close-ups of Cher, showing her facial expressions, linking to the lyrics how she people 'can't stop looking' and her and 'staring at her'. A link with the lyrics and the video. In conclusion, the music video does not have a very good narrative unlike the other videos that I have researched, however the music video that the artist has made supports a lot of points from the Goodwin's Theory.

Genre Research: Rap

Lose yourself by Eminem is a rap song which portrays our main character as someone from a ethnic minority trying to start a career by competing in rap battles, in order to give his family a better life. We see run down areas of where he lives and where he competes, which gives the audience sympathy for him as the run down areas would give the audience the idea that the location could contain a lot of crime and underground gangs. The video does not really illustrate the lyrics, however the lyrics match the narrative. An example of this is when he is singing that he has vomit on his sweater and we see him throwing up in a run down cubical. The location is supposed to be set in a urban but a specifically 'rough' area. This is because the character is based of Eminem who grew up in these urban like conditions and made it to what he is today.

There are a lot of establishing shots of the area that he is living in, to emphasise that the location and make the audience think further of what his living conditions are like, making the audience feel sympathy for him and his family in the music video. However, there are not many camera shots or compositions. This is because the handheld camerawork gives the music video 'unprofessional' vibe. This emphasises the poor society that the music video takes place in.

I think that the target audience would be at a young age between 16-25. The reason why I say 16 instead of 18 is because the music video targets American Youngsters who have just left school, to give them an insight of what living in a poor society is like. The music video is suppose to influence the audience, telling them that they only have 'One Shot, do not miss your chance to blow'. There are links between the lyrics and the video, matching some of the points within the Goodwin's Theory. There are also many close-ups of Eminem to show many of his emotions throughout the video, whether them being sad, depressed, angry or enthusiastic. An example of this is when he is looking through the mirror at himself.

Genre Research: Rock

The Pretender by Foo Fighters is a rock song which is very stereotypical, however, the song has different similarities compared to other rock songs because of its huge clear and white area, making it stand out to the audience. The song starts off quite slow paced and gentle as we see the band in the music video preparing to play for 'someone'. The reason why I classify this song in the Rock Genre is because of 2 key instruments that are used in the music and in the music video. An electric guitar and drums. This gives the audience an idea of what the music will sound like when progressing through the music video.

There are many close-ups of the singer within the music video. This is to show that he is not afraid and is rebellious against the 'police', standing behind the black line. This shows his emotions towards the audience that he is playing for (The riot police). The reason why I call them rebellious is because rock music tends to express youthful rebellion. This is also linked to the Riot Police being in the Music Video as a Riot Squad tend to go to places which are rioting, A.K.A dealing with rebellious people.

When there was only one Riot Officer, the music was very loud probably due to there being only one officer, therefore making him look like nothing to worry about. The music then becomes quiet when the Lone Officer is joined by a whole squadron of Riot Officers. The Black line was used to represent the Order side, and the Rebellious side. It could have been used also for the Officers to get into formation as they do in real life situations and prepare, as people who are rebellious tend to be 'dangerous'. It is then that when they charge, the Officers are then tidal waved with a huge wave of red liquid, stopping them in their tracks and the music once again rises, linking to their 'rebellious actions', fighting the system.

I'd say that the audience is somewhere between 18-25 years old, both men and women. People this age tend to do risks as such and many young people are rebellious compared to people of older age. The music video displays a message of rebellion despite the 'law' trying to be authoritative. People this age also tend to go to rallies have younger people tend to have a lot of energy within them where as people who are elder age tend to be 'law abiding'. The Music Video does fit with some aspects of Goodwin's Theory. There are a lot of close-ups to show the emotions of the officers faces and the band singers face, showing their anger and energy, linking with the lyrics. There is also a link between the lyrics and the visuals of the music and the video. An example of this is the Riot Officers. Since they are the law, you must respect the law as an abiding citizen, but in the lyrics, it goes on to say 'What if I say I never surrender?' intimidating the Riot Officers.
